Overview

“Learning from the Past”

The History Department is committed to the pursuit of academic excellence and the provision of a supportive, tolerant, inclusive and caring learning environment in which all pupils can develop an appreciation of the past and be inspired to achieve high standards in both their academic and personal progress.

Aims

  • To promote the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in History

  • To sustain and develop the pupils’ enjoyment of, and interest in, Chemistry.

  • To provide adequate opportunities for pupils to fulfil their academic potential in external examinations (GCSE, GCE), thereby preparing them for Further and/or Higher Education.

  • To provide relevant learning opportunities to help each pupil to develop as an individual, a contributor to society, and as a contributor to the economy and the environment.

  • To encourage positive attitudes towards a study of the past and an appreciation of the pupils’ own heritage and culture, and a sympathetic approach to other cultures and civilisations.

  • To promote ICT, communication skills and the use of mathematics in line with school policy and the requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

Key Stage 3

Pupils study a wide range of historical topics and venues across Years 8-10. Building early skills in History and understanding features of life in the Middle Ages form the basis of our studies in Year 8.

In Year 9, features of life in Early Modern Britain, along with genealogy, international terrorism and ground-breaking individuals, are the core of our studies.

In Year 10, pupils engage in a study of key events and developments across the 20th century which affect the 21st century, ranging from changes in communications, developments in civil rights, the growth of governments, the impact of wars and the growing role of science and technology in everyday life.

Pupils follow the KS3 (CCEA Statutory Curriculum)
