Overview

  • Psychology is a science and is the systematic study of the human mind, body, and behaviour. Psychologists have a valuable contribution to make to all areas of life today, whether at an individual level or society as a whole.

  • Psychology investigates an area of behaviour by drawing on formal research methods to build a body of scientific knowledge.

  • Psychology can be theoretical, for example looking at how the mind works (memory) or what drives behaviour like biological, psychological or environmental forces.

  • Psychology informs and allows us to understand and draw systematic conclusions as to the reasons behind and about the ways we behave.

  • Psychology has a practical element, such as in therapy and treatments for mental disorders but also in areas such as the workplace, for example advising large organisations (Police Service) about effective employment practices.

  • Psychology reaches into nearly every profession, ranging from health care settings to advertising

Careers

Psychology is a very useful subject for any career where you interact with people. Occupations that welcome psychology students include:

  • Law

  • Medicine

  • Journalism

  • Nursing

  • Marketing

  • Education

  • Counselling

If considering university, psychology is an invaluable subject. Although psychology is a science, it combines elements of both scientific research and the ability to communicate findings and conclusions. If you choose the arts degree, A-level psychology shows a competence in scientific thinking and numeracy that will add breadth to your skills. Similarly, if you choose a science degree psychology shows your ability to construct a logical, well-argued essay based on relevant research findings. Additionally, there are careers which require psychology degrees such as clinical psychology, organisational psychology as well as careers in psychological research and university lecturing.
