1st XI

2010 - 2011

This season promised to be a fairly successful one, with an experienced team at the centre plus an injection of youth with our fourth and fifth years. MEGAN JAMISON had a baptism of fire, moving from the 3rd XI straight onto the 1sts, but after a nervous start she quickly settled into her role. EMMA GORDON was back in the sweeper position, but I don’t think she reckoned on being the busiest player in the team for most of the season! We also welcomed three young additions to the squad – ANNA LOCKHART, SARAH FOSTER and CATHERINE JOHNSTON, straight up from the Under15s!

The Senior Schools’ Cup unfortunately saw us draw Cambridge House away in the first round in October! The girls put up a real fight, but this new team were still only getting used to each other, so losing 4-0 to a top class team who sported four Ulster players was not totally unexpected. We drew Royal and Prior College away to Donegal in January, but were narrowly beaten 2-1.

We say goodbye to six girls who have played together since first year and have been the backbone of Grosvenor hockey- NICKI CAUGHEY, FRANCESCA FITZSIMMONS, ORLA WEIR, LEEORAN CRAIG, RACHEL ROBINSON and Emma Gordon. A big thank you for all that you have contributed to school hockey over the seven years - just make sure that you keep playing next year! In spite of not getting a run the Schools’ Cup, the girls can be proud of their performances this season! The team’s dedication and commitment once again have been a credit to them.

Congratulations must go to CLAIRE CARUTH who, in spite of losing her appendix and falling foul of a viral infection, still made it on to the Ulster Under16 ‘B’ Squad to play against Leinster in March! She also captained the Belfast Area team, which played in and won the Northern Ireland Tournament in April. Anna Lockhart was also selected and played on the squad. Both girls have now been selected for the Ulster Under 18 Hockey Development Squad for season 2011-12. An excellent achievement!
