The English Department seeks to encourage a love of reading, an enthusiasm for writing and confidence in speaking and listening activities in all of our pupils.

Aims

  • To meet the statutory requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum (NIC) in such a way as to reflect the basic principles of English teaching: heuristic, recursive and holistic.

  • To develop our pupils as individuals, contributors to society and as contributors to the economy and the environment

  • To make a major contribution to the cross-curricular skill of communication and help promote literacy throughout the school

  • To prepare our pupils for academic courses at GCSE and A level

  • To contribute to the fulfilment of the school aims

  • To provide a combination of traditional and radical teaching styles to meet the needs of, individual pupils
