A Tribute to Mr John Lockett OBE

It is with huge sadness that the School announces the passing of Mr John Lockett OBE, former Principal of Grosvenor from 1993 to 2008.

Prior to joining Grosvenor, he taught in Lurgan Boys’ School where he became Head of Biology before moving to Banbridge Academy to become Head of Careers and Sixth Form.  He served as Vice Principal in Grosvenor for four years prior to becoming Principal.

A man of determination, he oversaw huge transformations in the School environment and population during his career, opening the £4.5m Ken Reid Science & Technology Block in November 1999.  This new building was only Phase 1 of changes to come and Mr Lockett played a major role in transforming the School facilities into what is now the magnificent building in Marina Park through his leadership in the major Public-Private-Partnership school building project.  Mr Lockett managed all of these changes without compromising his deep commitment to the pupils of Grosvenor, ensuring that they had opportunities to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.  He had a passion for Grosvenor, tirelessly giving long hours to the school due to his unwavering commitment to excellence and high standards. He faithfully attended every school function and was an ever-present figure on the sidelines during Saturday morning fixtures. The awarding of his OBE in 2009 recognised his huge contribution to education throughout his career.

Mr Lockett has maintained his links with Grosvenor over the years, attending Carol Services, Prize Distributions, Saturday fixtures and most recently the 80th anniversary Gala Dinner with his wife Vera.

Mr Lockett was well known for his love of travel, and in particular railway travel, as a longtime member of the Railway Preservation of Ireland based in Whitehead.

Mr Lockett is fondly remembered for his enthusiasm, witty intelligence and wisdom.  His legacy will have an enduring impact; the School community owes much to him and will be forever in his debt.  He was a true gentleman and will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Vera, his 3 married children and 8 grandchildren.
